Humira approval sought to treat Psoriasis

Abbott Laboratories has applied to the Food and Drug Administration and European regulators to get its anti-inflammatory drug Humira, which is manufactured in Worcester, approved to treat psoriasis.

Specifically, the Illinois company wants Humira approved for moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis, caused by the immune system's mistakenly attacking the body, causing scaly, red lesions that may crack and bleed. About 125 million people suffer from psoriasis worldwide.

Clinical trial data showed that Humira significantly cleared up affected areas and and cut the severity of psoriasis, compared with placebo and methotrexate, a standard treatment.

It's the company's attempt at a fifth use for the drug.

In February, the company gained FDA approval to sell Humira for Crohn's disease, a chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. The drug is also approved to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, an inflammatory disease of the spine.

Abbott booked more than $2 billion in Humira sales in 2006, with US sales accounting for $1.18 billion.

FDA Warns Drug Companies "You Have Gone Too Far!"

Drug Companies Gone Too Far?

That is the warning issued yesterday by Kathryn Aiken, one of 30 employees that view 40,000 ads a year for the FDA. One of the examples quoted was Enbrel's advertisement that resembles a beer commercial and doesn't warn people of the serious risks of some of the drugs. One of the most serious is a threefold risk increase of contracting malignant lymphoma.

The question I seek to answer is at what point do Psoriasis patients care. Is your quality of life diminished enough from Psoriasis that you are willing to bear the risk? Does the cure cause more damage than the ailment?

We are a volunteer staff here at PsoriasisAdvice.com. It seems like our blog gets ignored rather easily. We will try harder.

I was reading the boards on the National Association website today and I am bothered by the number of unhappy peopler still having problems with Psoriasis.

We need more activity. The drug community is reacting with a fervor. This is fantastic! Now, we need a cure for everyone. Pat is doing fantastic with Remicade. Others are reporting success with Enbrel, MethX, sunlight...You get the idea.

Humira Ok'd for RA

Humira has gotten the green light from the FDA to be used for RA patients. Supposedly, Psoriasis is still being considered too.

Shea Butter is also being touted as a treatment for Psoriasis. Never heard of it? Me neither. But, do a search on Google and you will find a ton of references.

Auto Immune Drugs linked to TB

The basic gist is you need to be tested prior to taking the injection drugs like Remicade and Enbrel as well as during the treatment period. Be aware of TB and its symptoms. TB, when diagnosed early, can be treated. It is when left untreated that it becomes fatal.

I really hadn't heard much about TB since the 70's. I remember getting the TB test yearly in school and really hadn't thought much more about it. Nor, have I thought about Nuclear Fallout Shelters, bad school lunches etc... since the 70's.

Be aware and be safe.

Oral Methotrexate

There are some new warnings coming out this week about the use of Oral Methotrexate Tablets that are used for severe psoriasis. Used in the right dosage they are very effective. However, used in the wrong dosage is proving fatal. Over 25 deaths have been reported in England alone.

Most importantly, the drug is to be taken weekly and not daily. This is where the overdose occurs.

On another note, I went to my high school reunion last night. Class of 1989 of West Muskingum High School. It was FABULOUS seeing everybody last night. Today, we are touring our old high school and going through the new high school being built. They are going to tear down my old building. Kind of sad... So she took her daughter Linda’s advice and started taking a holistic approach to her health. To treat her psoriasis she uses tea tree oil, which is a lot cheaper than a prescription and a doctor’s visit, she said.

Wyeth presented at a conference yesterday and spoke about all of their recent drugs and drugs in their pipeline. Here is a highlight about Enbrel.

ENBREL(R) (etanercept) for Psoriasis
The presentation also covered an important new regulatory filing pending
outside the U.S. for ENBREL for the treatment of psoriasis, an indication
recently approved by the U.S. FDA. More than 75 percent of psoriasis patients
are dissatisfied with their current therapy. In clinical trials, psoriasis
sufferers who used ENBREL showed rapid and sustained effects in the treatment
of chronic moderate to severe psoriatic plaques, with an absence of disease
flare when treatment was withdrawn and a drug safety profile similar to other
approved patient populations. Retreatment results were also similar to
initial results. Beyond psoriasis, ENBREL is also being investigated for
other TNF-mediated diseases such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and asthma,
with proof-of-concept studies ongoing.
